Classroom Management

-
The implementation of a routine for students to follow regularly will help them have an understanding of what is expected of them and when.
-
Having students help create some of the rules and expectations for the classroom will make it clear what is expected of them, what proper behavior is and looks like, and it will hold them accountable for their actions.
-
Students will be taught the signals I will use when I need them to settle down and pay attention.
-
Setting time aside every month for one on one time with each student will help me understand my students better. It will help me understand their needs and what I can do to help them.
-
I believe group work is crucial to help them develop their social and communication skills, and to learn how to work well with others. Therefore, creating a seating arrangement that allows for this will be important. It will also give students an immediate support system to turn to in class.
-
Students who are not behaving appropriately will be held accountable. The individual or group will be pulled aside, privately, and will be asked what they think they did wrong. If they do not know, students will be given an explanation of what they did wrong and why it was wrong, so that they have a clear understanding that their behavior was not acceptable. It is important that this is done privately because if students are forced to discuss their behavior in front of the class or if the whole class is punished for their behavior, tension can be created for the student involved and it can lead to other issues.
